The Library and Archive

In Mandala House, Library Reference section looking north (2006)The reference library contains a magnificent collection of books, journals, documents and photographs which have been collected by various methods including donations by individuals, legacies and purchases by the Society. A number of the books date back to the 19th century.

Most of the historical pictures are part of an amazing collection, held at the library, put together in albums by Mrs. Barbara Lamport-Stokes who has been associated with the society since 1954. This collection contains many hundreds of fascinating images of Malawi's history.

Same room, looking eastThe books at the library cover a wide range of subjects mainly referring to Africa in general and to Malawi in particular. These include history, government, sociology, biography, travel and exploration and wildlife amongst others.

The Library and Archive provides an ideal environment both for general browsing as well as serious research.

A copying service is available at a nominal charge.

There are many plans for the future development of the library as a resource that will become more widely available.

School parties have already started visiting the library so that students can be introduced to the pleasures and uses of a good collection.

New books relevant to the collection will be added whenever possible in order to maintain a dynamic resource.

The entire catalogue will become electronic and documents and photographs will be scanned to enable easy access to users.

New bookcases and other furnishings and fittings will be acquired to provide optimum protection for the collection.

The Library and Archive cooperates with the National Archives based in Zomba, Malawi.

Library Hours of Opening

  • Monday to Friday, 09:00-12:00
  • 2nd Thursday of each month, evenings, 18:00-19:30
  • The hours are now limited because the Library is entirely run and managed by volunteers. Once a permanent librarian is appointed, the hours will be extended.
